Prof Philip Moons, honorary Professor in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at UCT and collaborator on the Adole 7C study, spoke about Patient perspectives on mobile health in congenital heart disease: focus on motivation and quality of life at the 2018 European Society of Cardiology Congress held in Munich, Germany.
The Cape Town Declaration, first published online in The Annals of Thoracic Surgery on August 3rd 2018, declares its mission "to urge all relevant entities within the international cardiac surgery, industry, and government sectors to commit to develop and implement an effective strategy to address the scourge of RHD in the developing world through increased access to life-saving cardiac surgery".
Each year the first week of August is dedicated to highlighting and raising awareness about an entirely preventable disease which causes unnecessary death and suffering amongst the poorest communities in our country. This Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Awareness Week (6-12 August 2018) and in memory of Professor Bongani Mayosi, who tirelessly championed the fight against RHD, we call on health leaders in South Africa to pay attention to the devastation that the disease continues to inflict.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi on July 27 2018. His loss to South Africa, Africa, cardiovascular diseases of poverty, his family and friends is unfathomable. Professor Mayosi will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure and fortune to cross his path and will always be remembered for his integrity, scientific rigour and dedication to improving public health.
